US Election 2016: Donald Trump reaches number of delegates needed to clinch nomination
Donald Trump has reached the number of delegates needed to clinch the Republican nomination for president, according to Associated Press.
The controversial tycoon reportedly now has 1,238 delegates - one more than required - after a number of unbound delegates said they will support him at the convention.
He will officially be confirmed as the party's nominee at the convention in Cleveland in July.
Our Washington Correspondent Robert Moore said Trump had pulled off "one of the greatest feats in modern American political history".
Speaking hours after reaching the number of delegates, Trump thanked North Dakota for putting him "over the top".
He also poked fun at Clinton for not being able to "close the deal" in the Democratic race against Bernie Sanders.
Trump successfully fought off challenges from 16 other Republican contenders during an ugly primary contest.
