One Direction star Niall Horan has taken to Twitter to condemn a group of "fans" sending him abusive messages about his family.

The 22-year-old posted a series of tweets which explained how he had been subjected to relentless abusive messages that has been "keeping me awake at night".

In particular, his nephew had been targeted in the messages, he said.

Horan tweeted that the fans had been "nothing but abusive", and that they had said "the worst things ever" about his nephew.

His last tweet read: "Don't worry about me. I'm the most carefree, laid back person around. But I'm just signalling it, because this s**** is happening to others".

A number of fans posted their support for the singer.
