Liverpool airport in security alert after scanner failure

Liverpool John Lennon Airport has suffered a security alert after a scanning device was found to be malfunctioning.

The airport confirmed that passengers have been removed from the departure lounge and were being re-screened but stressed there was "no threat to passenger safety".

It said that there might be "some delays" to flights as a result.

"Due to a technical problem with one of the airport's passenger scanning machines, all passengers have been removed from the departure lounge and are currently in the process of being re-screened," the airport said in a statement published on its website.

It later confirmed that all passengers had been re-screened.

A spokesman for Merseyside police described the incident as a "customer service issue" and said they were not involved.
