13-year-old girl 'locked in basement for a year'
A father and son have been arrested after allegedly shackling a 13-year-old girl in their basement for over a year.
The girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told police she was kept in the dark and handcuffed to a support beam by her ankle at an address in Toledo, Ohio.
It was also claimed she was fed scraps of food and was forced to use a bucket, filled with ammonia, as her bathroom.
The father and son - Timothy Ciboro, 57, and Esten Ciboro, 27 - were each held on a $500,000 bond.
It was unclear how long she was held in the basement, but police believe the abuse began after her mother moved out of the property four years ago.
It was reported that she escaped after managing to obtain the key to her handcuffs whilst the suspects went for a run.
A passerby who spotted the child outside, then called police.
When police arrived at the property, Timothy and Esten Ciboro were loading Timothy's two younger children into a van, already packed with possessions.
It was reported that handcuffs and a bucket of ammonia were found in the basement of the property.
The Ciberos were charged with endangering children, torture, cruelty, abuse and kidnapping to terrorise or inflict serious physical harm.
Authorities believe the other children weren't abused.
Robin Reese, an executive director of Lucas County Children Services, said the 13-year-old girl is "pretty traumatised" and the other children were "in a relatively good condition".
All the children are now being placed in foster care.
