Driving licence smartphone app being developed

A smartphone version of the UK driving licence is being developed by the Driving and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).

The DVLA chief executive, Oliver Morley, posted an image of a "prototype" on Twitter.

Mr Morley said there is no timeline for when the digital licence will be introduced, which appears as a "pass" in an iPhone's Apple Wallet app.

The digital licence is an "add-on" rather than a replacement for the photo card, and security is the DVLA's "priority", Mr Morley added.

The paper part of the licence was abolished last year as part of a drive by the government to reduce red tape.
