'I was on autopilot': Don Lock's killer tells police what happened in attack
On July 18, two days after retired solicitor Don Lock was stabbed 39 times to death in a "road rage" attack, Matthew Daley gave an open account to police of the killing.
On Monday, Daley, who has a decade-long history of mental illness, was convicted of Mr Lock's manslaughter in West Sussex on July 16, 2015.
The 35-year-old screamed "die you f****** c***" as he stabbed grandfather Mr Lock 39 times in the head, back, neck and chest.
He was cleared of murder on grounds of diminished responsibility.
"It was just like autopilot - I wasn't thinking"
In police custody, Daley compared the moment of the attack to like being on "autopilot".
"I stood up with... the knife and that is when I attacked him", he told officers.
"I reached out with it and it went into his arm. I reached out with it again and it went into his body, and then I think he fell to the floor.
"It was just like autopilot - I wasn't thinking. I was just doing ... stabbed [sic] him quite a few times".
Daley's mother told jurors at Lewes Crown Court that her family had "pleaded" with experts to section him as his mental health declined when his parents' relationship broke down.
She also revealed that Daley confessed to the killing just as she was about to enter a police station to express fears that her son may be responsible.
