Video report by ITV News Correspondent Paul Davies:

Vincent Van Gogh's life and death is the subject of a new film that will use his paintings, and the characters he created, to tell his story.

The film, called 'Loving Vincent', has taken six years to make and is the world's first feature-length painted animation.

It will bring to life over 120 of the Dutch artists greatest works of art and feature 'interviews' with his characters, who will tell his story drawn from 800 letters written by the painter himself.

Every scene has been created in a conventional way by actors, before each frame of film was hand-painted by more than 60 artists - the entire production, when it is finished, will be made up of 65,000 paintings.

The creators of the project say "every frame in the 'Loving Vincent' movie is an oil painting on canvas, using the very same technique in which Vincent himself painted."

The movie is expected to be released by the end of the year.
