Everton have relieved manager Roberto Martinez of his duties, the Premier League club have confirmed.

The decision comes after the Toffees' defeat at Sunderland on Wednesday night.

It was the latest loss in a dismal season for Everton, which sees them sitting in 12th place in the table.

Martinez has struggled to organise his side's defence, which has been one of the key downfalls at Goodison Park.

Many fans have called for his dismissal in recent months as the team seem to be going backwards despite making it to two cup semi-finals this season.

Former defender David Unsworth will take charge of the final league game of the season against Norwich on Sunday.

Reports in Netherlands claim Frank De Boer, who has confirmed he will be leaving Ajax, has been offered the job.Everton also confirmed they have cancelled their awards night which was due to take place on Thursday.
