Adam Ant is back - will the millions be swooning again?

It's a moment I remember clearly - 36 years ago on Top of the Pops - the moment Adam and the Ants made their TV debut.

They'd been asked to appear on the show with just a few hours notice - but that appearance doing Dog Eat Dog was unforgettable.

The two drummers for a start - Burundi style - was unheard of on a mainstream pop programme like that and then the man in the front with his cavalry jacket and that white strip across his nose!

Within weeks the band released Kings of the Wild Frontier - it knocked Abba off the top spot in the album charts and went on to become one of the most revered albums of the era.

Now that album is being re-released - remastered by the man himself, who is setting out in a fortnight to tour the album - playing every one of its tracks in order no doubt to audiences who know every word.

It is clear from the Twitter response today that he has a huge fanbase and indeed his tour has nearly sold out already.

The man I met today was gentle and soft spoken, thoughtful too when he spoke to me of the mental health issues that he has suffered and which he has spoken of publicly.

How different from the last time I had seen him - when I covered his court case in 2002, which ended with him receiving hospital treatment. Then overweight, and clearly in a bad place, he looked nothing like the Adam Ant of 80s fame.

Today he looked fit and well and clearly relishing the chance to get back out on stage to sing the songs that helped launch his career around the world.

He won't be trying to exactly replicate the Adam Ant of 35 years ago he says - his voice has changed, his body has - but there is no doubting the intent - antmusic which wowed millons all those years ago is back. Will the millions be swooning again?
