Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps has become a father.

The 18-time Olympic gold medallist announced that his fiancee Nicole Johnson had given birth to Boomer Robert Phelps on Thursday.

In an Instagram post, featuring a monochrome image of Phelps cradling his newborn son and kissing his partner, he said "Healthy and happy!!! Best feeling I have ever felt in my life!!".

Phelps's longtime coach, Bob Bowman, confirmed that the baby's middle name is in his honour, calling it "a big surprise".

Phelps is currently training for the 2016 Rio Olympics.
