Voters in part of London were turned away from polling booths this morning when they arrived to cast their ballot in the capital's local and mayoral elections.

It's understood that a formal complaint over the problems has been lodged with Barnet Council by one of the Mayoral candidates.

Barnet Council told ITV News that there had been problems with the electoral lists, which had names missing. All 155 polling stations in Barnet were affected.

A council spokesman said the problem had been fixed before 11am.

Anyone who was turned away and cannot get back to the polls before they close at 10pm, he added, may be able to vote via emergency proxy.

They will need to fill out an application form on the council's website and submit it by 5pm.

One voter, Jennifer Lipman, attempted to vote at Hoop Lane polling station but was turned away.

She said the problem was "disastrous".

People on the ground also took to social media to complain about not being able to cast their vote, claiming staff had told them that six or seven stations were having issues.

A Barnet Council spokesman apologised for the "problems with voting in Barnet".
