First US-Cuba cruise in 40 years sets sail
The first US cruise ship to Cuba for over 40 years has set sail from Miami.
Carnival's 704-passenger ship Adonia is currently on a 7-day cruise to Havana, Cuba. It will also visit the ports of Cienfuegos and Santiago de Cuba on its way.
Restarting the US-Cuba cruise - the first since 1978 - was an important part of a bid from Barack Obama's administration to increase tourism with the country and restore diplomatic relations.
The communist nation had until recently banned Cuban-born citizens from entering the country by sea - a decision that led to protests and a discrimination lawsuit from the Cuban-American community in Miami.
Cuba changed its policy on 22nd April, making the cruise possible.
Arnold Donald, Carnival President and CEO, said: "To be a part of truly making history and preparing for an even more positive future for everyone, is one of the greatest honors any company can have."
The operator said the Adonia will cruise every other week from Miami to Cuba.
