The Times admits mistake in leaving Hillsborough inquests off front page

The Times newspaper has said it "made a mistake" by not including coverage of the Hillsborough inquests on the front page of its first edition.

The paper - along with The Sun - was fiercely criticised for not covering the story that an inquest had ruled that 96 Liverpool fans were "unlawfully killed" on its front page.

It amended the second edition of its paper to feature the story.

John Witherow, the paper's editor, was quoted by the Guardian as saying: "We made a mistake. We put it right."

In a statement posted on Twitter, the Times said:

Later editions of The Times featured a photo of the families outside the Warrington courtroom on the front page, along with a trailer for its coverage which ran to several pages, including an editorial comment.

The Sun also came in for criticism after not featuring the Hillsborough inquest's findings on its front page.

Despite not putting the story on the front of the paper, the tabloid did run a double-page spread on the outcome of the inquest, and carried an editorial in which it once again apologised for its 1989 front page story that blamed fans over the tragedy.
