A young female tiger has been found wandering through a suburban area of Texas after apparently escaping from her owner.

The big cat - who was reportedly still sporting a collar and leash - was found by startled passer-by Jonathan Gessner and his partner in Conroe, just north of Houston.

Mr Gessner told The Courier newspaper that they saw it peering out of a bush.

The cat is currently being held in a secure facility under care of police, who told ABC News that she was "very calm" and was obviously used to being around humans.

A potential owner has since come forward to claim the wayward pet, according to ABC13.

"Her name is Nala. She's very nice. She's a 4-5 month old tiger," said the man, who identified himself only as Cody.

"We dropped her off at a friend's and I don't really know how she got out," he added.
