A mother who left her newborn baby to die in a recycling bin has been jailed for life.

Angela Alexie, 25, from Detroit, gave birth to her son in a garage in late 2015 before dumping him in a bin outside her house.

The baby eventually died from exposure, while his body was discovered at a recycling centre in January this year.

On Tuesday, Alexie told a judge she was sorry before being sentenced to a mandatory life sentence without parole for child abuse and murder.

"I didn't mean for it to happen. I wish I could take it all back", she told a judge in Macomb County.

Alexie's three other children had earlier been removed from her care. She acknowledged a long history of heroin and cocaine use.
