An Australian politician has mocked a video recorded by Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, apologising for illegally bringing their dogs into the country.

Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce said he could have directed the film better himself, and said it looked like Depp, a Golden Globe Award winner, was auditioning for a role in The Godfather.

"I don't think he'll get an Academy Award for his performance," Mr Joyce said.

Depp and Heard's apology video was shown during a hearing at an Australian court on Monday.

Heard pleaded guilty to falsifying an immigration document when the couple brought their two dogs, Pistol and Boo, into the country last year.

She avoided any jail time for what has become known as the "war on terrier" in the Australian media.
