Pope Francis ended a five-hour tour of refugee centres on the Greek island of Lesbos on Saturday by taking 12 Syrians - including six children - back with him to Rome.

In what the Vatican described as a "gesture of welcome regarding refugees", three Muslim families in total boarded the pontiff's plane when it departed on Saturday afternoon.
