A Royal globetrotter: The Queen's travels in numbers

The Queen is set to celebrate her 90th birthday on Thursday, and in those years she has travelled around the world 42 times.

And all those trips have been made without a passport - as British passports are issued in her name, she is the only member of the royal family not required to carry one.

Here's a look at the Queen's travels in numbers.

The figures were put together by research commissioned by travel website lastminute.com, which found she received many gifts on her travels, including a baby elephant during her visit to Cameroon in 1972.

Although usually accustomed to staying in the smartest hotels, the Queen took a bed and breakfast manager by surprise in 1981, after getting stuck in a blizzard near Bristol and asking to stay the night.

The manager insisted on giving the monarch his own top floor flat to stay in.
