Joao Carvalho: MMA fighter dies from injuries suffered in bout
A mixed martial arts fighter has died after suffering injuries during a bout in Dublin.
Portugal's Joao Carvalho fell ill after being beaten Charlie Ward in a match at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The 28-year-old underwent emergency brain surgery but he died from his injuries on Monday night.
Conor McGregor, the Ultimate Fighting Championship champion and a team-mate of Ward, paid tribute to Carvalho on his Facebook page.
Total Extreme Fighting, which organised the fight, said it was deeply saddened by the news of Mr Carvalho's death.
"We extend our most sincere condolences to the family of Joao Carvalho's and his team mates in Team Nobrega," chief executive Cesar Silva said.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with them.
"We'd also like to thank all sports fans for their concern and support. We will give whatever support we can to Joao's family."
