Flights diverted amid strong winds as Storm Katie strikes parts of UK
Gusts of more than 70mph have been battering parts of the UK as Storm Katie hit overnight.
A number of flights were diverted from Gatwick Airport and the southbound Dartford River Crossing and the Severn Bridge in both directions were closed because of strong winds.
The Met Office issued a yellow warning for wind in south Wales, the east and south-west of England, while a more serious amber warning was put in place for London and the south-east.
Heavy rain created a risk of localised flooding and motorists were warned to be wary of falling trees. There were reports of trees down in several places.
Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said: "There is likely to be a lot of surface spray on the roads, there could be localised flooding, and the winds could cause branches to come off the trees, and one or two tiles off the roof.
"On the south coast there could be quite large waves.
"People should keep tuned in to the forecast, and avoid the east coast, south coast and high grounds as well if possible. Allow extra time for your journey and if possible try and delay your journey as winds will tend to ease off throughout the day."
Residents reported trees falling in Brighton and Bognor.
