A Police Community Support Officer who raped a child and filmed himself having sex with a dog has been jailed for more than 11 years.

Derren Jon Tomlinson, aged 44, was also banned from working with children for life after his crimes were exposed by "abhorrent" pictures and film on his mobile phone.

He pleaded guilty to rape, sexual assault and a count of having intercourse with an animal at a court hearing last month.

During the sentencing the judge said he considered Tomlinson to be dangerous individual who posed an ongoing threat to children.

Tomlinson, of Shrewsbery, had worked as a PCSO for around nine years when the offences came to light during an inquiry into separate matters by West Mercia Police's anti-corruption unit.

In court today his lawyer said the former police worker was sickened at his own actions and wanted to apologise publicly.

Tomlinson was given a custodial sentence of 11 years and four months and an extended licence period of four years and eight months.

He has also been dismissed from his PCSO role in a misconduct hearing held by his former employers West Mercia Police.
