A husband in Missouri had a lot of explaining to do when he accidentally threw away his wife's wedding ring worth $400,000 (£276,000).

Bernie Squiteri threw Carla's wedding ring and anniversary band in the bin after she took them off to dry the dishes and left it on the kitchen worktop.

His wife only noticed the next morning and when she asked her husband about the rubbish he replied "the binmen came five hours ago!"

The couple called the bin company and found, to their horror, that it was going to a radioactive waste site.

Luckily, the company was able to redirect the truck to a different landfill.

Joe Allen, Meridian's operations manager, even offered to help search for the ring even though he thought it was "a waste of time."

Around 20 minutes later Allen found the ring in a rubbish pile Bernie described as "half a city block long and 20 feet high."

The couple described the incident as a "miracle" have said that they are still in shock and that the experience "gave them hope that there's still good honest people in the world."
