Judy Murray resigns as captain of GB's Fed Cup team

Judy Murray has stepped down from her role as captain for Great Britain's Fed Cup after five years, the Lawn Tennis Association has confirmed.

The 56-year-old was appointed to lead the UK team in the women's equivalent of the Davis Cup in 2011 but has been unable to achieve her goal of promotion to the World Group.

Britain has been stuck in the second tier of the Fed Cup for 12 years.

She has spoken about spending more time as a grandmother after son Andy became a father to Sophia last month.

Murray's passion is grass-roots tennis and she spends a lot of time going round the country with her Miss-Hits programme, targeting girls aged between five and eight, and Tennis on the Road programmes.
