Black rhino Solio among many left orphaned by poachers

A black rhino who popped into shot as ITV News' Mark Austin prepared to go live on tonight's Evening News was left an orphan due to poachers.

The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust told ITV News Solio was found standing by her injured mother in 2010.

She was then just six months old but her mother's shattered shoulder prevented her from standing and protecting her calf.

Now under the watchful eye of keepers at the Trust, six-year-old Solio likes nothing more than dust baths and wallowing in mud before giving herself a good scratch against a tree as she roams the wilds of Nairobi National park.

The Trust, which works to rescue and rehabilitate orphaned baby elephants and conserve other wildlife in Kenya, said a lesion which can be seen on Solio's neck is caused by a parasite which all black rhinos have in the wild.
