Crufts may be best known to most people as a parade of cute dogs - but its also a fiercely fought contest.

Now some fans are barking mad after it emerged that a judge on the show awarded a prize to a dog co-owned by her half sister.

James the Gordon setter was crowned the best-in-group by Di Arrowsmith, whose sister Josie Baddeley is among the dog's owners.

Some dog fanciers are claiming that it could have been ruff justice after the link between the two emerged.

One wrote on an online forum that "decent standards of behaviour" dictate that exhibitors should not enter categories judged by family members.

Meanwhile Crufts has hit back saying that James won fairly, and that no rules were broken.

Ms Arrowsmith said it would have been dishonest not to give James the prize Credit: Crufts

Ms Arrowsmith has also strongly contested any suggestion of wrongdoing.

Caroline Kisko, the secretary of Crufts organisers the Kennel Club, pointed out that James had already won four other prizes on the day under different judges before he was awarded best-in-breed by Ms Arrowsmith.

"Any dog that is chosen as a winner is done so because of the judge's honest opinion on the day and is judged with integrity," she said.
