Thousands of dogs compete for glory at this year's Crufts

Bichon Frises prepare at Crufts 2016 at the NEC, Birmingham.

More than 22,000 dogs, including six that have become famous because of their popularity on social media platform Instagram, are taking part at this year's Crufts.

The world famous event began today at Birmingham's National Exhibition Centre.

Crufts' organiser, the Kennel Club, hopes the popularity of the dogs featured on the dedicated Instagram stand who are 'followed' by thousands of people, will help to educate prospective owners about welfare issues.

Some of the Instagram "stars" - including a Pembroke Welsh corgi named Winny - are said to have revived the popularity of their breed.

Lindsay Sanders, the owner of a two-year-old miniature dachshund with more than 66,000 Instagram followers, said she was pleased to be able to highlight educational issues surrounding the breed, and also raise funds for the Kennel Club Charitable Trust.
