Sunderland chief Byrne quits after Johnson convictions
Sunderland chief executive Margaret Byrne has resigned from her role following the convictions of Adam Johnson.
Byrne had been under pressure following claims she knew that Johnson had kissed the 15-year-old girl he was later convicted of grooming and having sexual activity with.
The club was given Whatsapp messages and Johnson's police interviews, but was allowed to play on.
Byrne said in a statement: "I recognise that, as CEO, my involvement with Mr Johnson and the decision to allow him to continue to represent Sunderland was a serious mistake."
Johnson was originally suspended by the club but was reinstated to play after being charged, appearing 28 times for the club, including scoring in his last game for Sunderland against Liverpool.
