Donald Trump's momentum in the race to be the Republican's 2016 Presidential nominee gathered pace on Super Saturday, with victories in the Louisiana primary election and Kentucky caucus.

However, Texas senator Ted Cruz also had a good night with victories in the nominating contests in Kansas and Maine.

But the other Republican contenders, Marco Rubio and John Kasich, hardly made an impression in the voting.

Speaking in Florida as the results were still coming in, Mr Trump called on Mr Rubio to drop out of the race adding that he would "love to take on Ted one-on-one".

In the contest for the Democratic presidential nominee, Bernie Sanders enjoyed more success than Hillary Clinton with victories in Kansas and Nebraska, however Mrs Clinton won in Louisiana.

Experts said Mr Sanders' failure to win Louisiana once again exposes his lack of appeal to African-American voters.

All eyes now turn to Super Tuesday when Republicans will vote in the Hawaii and Idaho caucuses and Idaho, Michigan and Mississippi primaries and the Democratic contests will be the Michigan and Mississippi primaries.
