Google self-driving car crashed into a city bus

A Google self-driving car crashed with a bus on the public road in California earlier this month, it has emerged.

The tech company has said it bears "some responsibility" for the low-speed collision and has tweaked its systems to learn from the error.

A self-driven Lexus travelling at two miles per hour collided with the side of a city bus going at 15mph as the car tried to merge into the centre of a lane, Google said in a report sent to regulators.

No one was hurt in the crash, which may mark the first occasion that an autonomous Google vehicle has been involved in an accident after making a mistake.

The company said that it had learned from the incident and had made changes to the software used by the cars to avoid a repetition.

It said that the test driver had not stepped in as he wrongly believed the bus would give way.

There has been no official decision over which party, if either, was responsible for the collision.

Google has previously said that its autonomous vehicles have never been at fault in any crashes.

The crash came as the tech company argued that it should be allowed to test vehicles which are not fitted with steering wheels and other controls.
