Actor Steve Coogan has been banned from driving and issued with a fine after being found guilty of driving at almost double the speed limit.

The TV and film star, whose comic characters include Alan Partridge and Paul Calf, was found doing 54mph in a 30mph zone.

Sussex Police said Coogan was driving a Mazda MX-5 SE sports car on the A259 at Black Rock, Brighton, on October 14 last year when he was pulled over.

Coogan was disqualified from driving for 28 days at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Wednesday a police spokesman said.

The 50-year-old star, who lives in the village of Ovingdean in East Sussex, did not attend the hearing but entered a guilty plea through his solicitor.

He was also fined £670, ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £67 and costs of £85.
