An Indian rhinoceros calf has been born at Toronto Zoo - the first surviving calf to be born there since 1999.

The calf arrived on Wednesday to 11-year-old mother Asha and father Vishnu and is currently being kept out of public view along with his mother.

An Indian rhinoceros' gestation lasts 425 to 496 days or approximately 16 months, and a single young is born between the end of February and the end of April.

The zoo said the calf is part of a conservation programme for the species as there are only about 2,000 Indian rhinos left in the wild.
