Leicester City fan set to win £25,000 on 5000-1 bet

Leigh Herbert put £5 on a 5000-1 bet on his favourite team winning the Premier League.

A Leicester City fan could find his favourite team earning him £25,000 after he had a £5 flutter on them winning the league.

Leigh Herbert, 39, has been a fan of the team for 25 years but had never bet on them winning, until William Hill put them at 5000-1 of winning the Premier League.

The 39-year-old carpenter admitted he had "had a few beers" while on a camping holiday in August when he saw the odds and thought it was worth "a few quid".

"I woke up the next morning," he said "and I said to my fiancee, I think I've lost that fiver."

But now the team has surpassed expectations this season, with a 3-1 win against title favourites Manchester City giving them five points clear at the top of the Premier League, bookies William Hill are now hedging their bets.

William Hill are offering him a cash out of £3,200, which he has refused.

"I am going to hang in there, I believe in fairy tales and £25,000 will be a life changing win," he said.

Rupert Adams, spokesman for William Hill, said that if Leicester win the league, the company will be paying out more than £2 million in winnings.

"For commercial reason we are not Leicester fans," he said. "That said, we will not begrudge Leigh as this would be a fantastic feat."

Just 12 people backed the team at 5000-1 and the biggest payout would be to someone from Guildford who placed £75 each way at 1500-1 and will collect £140,775.
