One person killed as leaders of Oregon occupation arrested
One person has been killed during the arrest of the leaders of an armed occupation at a US wildlife refuge.
Robert “LaVoy” Finicum, one of the main spokesmen for the occupation, was killed during a shootout with federal officials in Burns as tensions continued to grow over the occupation of an Oregon wildlife outpost.
Brothers Ammon and Ryan Bundy and six other people involved in the stand-off were arrested, and another was injured, during the shootout according to officials.
The FBI said Finicum was "a subject of federal probable cause arrest" but released no further details.
A group of men led by Bundy took over the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge at the beginning of the year following a rally in support of members of a local family who are facing jail for arson.
The others arrested on Tuesday were Brian Cavalier, 44, Shawna Cox, 59, Ryan Payne, 32, Joseph O'Shaughnessy, 45 and Peter Santilli, 50.
All of those arrested face federal charges of conspiracy to use force, intimidation or threats to impede federal officers from discharging their duties, the FBI said.
The FBI later revealed one of the occupiers of the wildlife refuge, Jon Eric Ritzheimer, aged 32, surrendered to police in Arizona.
Protesters were still occupying the remote refuge following the arrests.
