The mother of a teenager who was groomed and murdered by a man he met on the internet claims her son's killer has contacted her online.

Breck Bednar, 14, was brutally murdered by 20-year-old Lewis Daynes in a sexually motivated attack in February 2014.

Lorin LaFave, Breck's mother, said she had been sent two online letters purporting to be Daynes - one sent in November and the other this week ahead of a programme about her son's death.

"It's very distressing and I know it's him," LaFave, who is from the United States, is quoted by the BBC as saying.

A Prison Service spokesperson told ITV News: "Prisoners are banned from using mobile phones and social media. If they break the rules they will be disciplined and can have time added onto their sentence."

The Ministry of Justice spokesperson said it had found no evidence of electronic devices in the murderer's cell but is conducting another search "as a matter of urgency."

Essex Police confirmed that it is investigating the online letters.

Daynes, a computer engineer, lured Breck to his flat in Grays, Essex on February 17 before slashing his victim's throat.

He then calmly called 999 and told the operator that the pair had got into an "altercation and "only one of us came out alive".

Daynes was jailed for life

Speaking about the messages, Ms LaFave said:
