The anonymous accuser of former armed forces chief Lord Bramall should be investigated, the D-Day veteran's son has said.

Field Marshal Lord Bramall was widely named in the media as being under investigation over alleged historical child sex crimes. Police said on Friday there was "insufficient evidence" to proceed against the peer.

Nicholas Bramall, in a letter to the Telegraph newspaper, said the key witness who is known as "Nick" had been "peddling unsubstantiated and uncorroborated information" and called on him to be investigated.

There are growing calls for the Metropolitan Police to issue a full apology to the Second World War veteran and his family.

Nicholas Bramall said the statement was "well overdue yet grossly inadequate" and was "almost grudging".

London mayor and MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip Boris Johnson said while much of the ensuing criticism of the police had been misplaced, Lord Bramall now deserved a "full and heartfelt" apology for his treatment.
