Former Liverpool and Arsenal winger Jermaine Pennant gets 'sexy' deal in Singapore
Jermaine Pennant has completed his move to Singapore, signing a "sexy" contract with Tampines Rovers.
Tampines chairman Krishna Ramachandra told the press that the deal on offer was "sexy" and more than what they normally pay a player. It is believed the winger will earn around £30,000 a month, depending on performance.
Pennant, who recently played for Pune in India, was presented a Veloster Turbo from Hyundai, the club's sponsor, at his unveiling.
“No matter where you go in the world, it’s always a great chance to prove yourself,” said Pennant.
“It’s not a lesser league but a different chapter.”
The likes of Hyundai will help pay Pennant's one-year deal, which is seen as the biggest in the Singapore league's 21-year history.
“The financial component (of the contract) is one not typical to what we traditionally pay our players. We’ve been fortunate that couple of sponsors who have stepped up to absorb the cost associated with the signing on,” Ramachandra said last week.
“It will inject more confidence into the fanbase. In the long term, this is the necessary fillip that Singapore football has needed,” Ramachandra added.
