Dramatic footage of the raid which finally brought the notorious fugitive drug lord known as El Chapo back into custody has been released by the Mexican government.

The video shows marines storming the building, firing shots through the windows and detonating what appear to be grenades as they tried to force their way in.

Joaquin 'El Chapo' Guzman had been on the run for six months after staging an audacious prison break, escaping through a tunnel from his cell.

Five people were killed and one Mexican marine wounded in the pre-dawn shootout in Los Mochis, within the gangmaster's home state of Sinaloa.

El Chapo reportedly tried to flee the raid via a drain, but was caught in his getaway vehicle.
