BNP 'no longer an official political party' after failing to register this year
The British National Party (BNP) has been removed from the official list of political parties, the Electoral Commission has announced.
It comes after the party failed to register this year.
By law, every party must confirm their details annually and pay a re-registration fee of £25 - but with the deadline of January 7 now past, the BNP has now been deleted from the register.
The Electoral Commission announced the move on Twitter.
It means that BNP candidates cannot, from now on, use the party's name, description or any emblems or symbols on ballot papers at elections.
The party is allowed to submit an application to re-register and will be considered alongside other new applications.
The Electoral Commission said that the BNP's name, description and any emblems associated with the party will be protected for two years to prevent other parties from adopting them.
