Columns of ash and smoke spewed more than 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) into the sky as Mexico's Colima or 'Fire' volcano erupted twice in one day.

Timelapse footage captured the eruptions, which happened within an hour and a half of one another - the first at 11.10am local time (5.10pm GMT) and the second at 12.47pm (6.47pm GMT).

The huge volcano, part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, has shown increasingly regular activity since July.

It also put on a spectacular display on Christmas Eve, shooting fire and red-hot rocks into the night sky.

Mexico contains more than 3,000 volcanos, but only 14 - including Colima - are considered active.

The last major eruption at Colima was in 1986.
