Storm Desmond: 1,000 homes still without power as further rain set to hit

More severe weather is set to hit flood-hit communities in north-west England still recovering from Storm Desmond, with 1,000 homes still without power, according to Electricity North West.

Between 20 and 40 mm of rain is expected to fall later on Wednesday, with forecasters warning of further disruption in Cumbria - the worst hit area - as well as parts of Lancashire and North Yorkshire.

The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings for rain and wind across northern England and Scotland, with gusts of up to 70mph predicted.

But there is not expected to be a repeat of last weekend's scenes when record rainfall forced thousands of people to leave their flooded properties.

Engineers are still working to restore power to about 1,000 properties in Cumbria, according to Electricity North West.
