US girl with severe burns has one wish this Christmas - to receive cards from all over the world
Standing next to an empty Christmas card tree, Safyre Terry from the USA shares her one wish for this festive season – to fill her tree with lots of cards from all over the world.
The severely burned girl has appealed online for the world to share the festive spirit with her, as her own family is no longer around to do so.
In 2013 Safyre’s home in Schenectady, New York was destroyed by arson, killing her father David Terry and three younger siblings.
Safyre, the only survivor in the fire, was found shielded by her father's body and suffered burns on more than 75% of her body.
Since the tragedy Safyre has had more than 50 operations and subsequently lost her right hand and left foot, her paternal aunt Liz Dolder told BuzzFeed News.
Dolder, who now has sole custody of the girl, added that Safyre continues to have problems with her mouth due to the scar tissue tightening up and will have her next operation on January 5.
Just like most children, Safyre loves everything associated with Christmas, and now an online campaign is hoping to bring a smile to the girl's face.
Safyre Schenectady's Super Survivor, a Facebook page set up by Dodler to track Safyre’s recovery and consolidate support from the local community, has appealed to the internet to help the girl fill up her Christmas tree card holder.
The internet and international media have taken notice of Safyre's wish and helped spread the word to make her Christmas more merry this year.
A post in Imgur says: "Let's make this little girl's Christmas wish come true. She wants to fill up her card tree. Please take a few minutes and send a Christmas card her way, she will love receiving cards from all over the world."
The appeal has also been shared by a Twitter account associated with Anonymous, as well as news organisations from around the world.
