Man who shot wife and posted picture on Facebook found guilty of murder
A man who shot and killed his wife before posting a photo of her body - and a confession - to Facebook has been found guilty of murder.
Derek Medina, aged 33, from Florida, claimed he had suffered years of abuse at the hands of 27-year-old Jennifer Alfonso, and argued that he had killed her in self-defence, saying she had been threatening him with a knife.
But prosecutors told the jury that he had previously threatened to kill her if she left him, which she had told friends she planned to do.
They also argued that at 6ft and over 14st, he could easily have overpowered his 5ft 6ins wife without shooting her eight times.
Forensic evidence also indicated he had shot all eight rounds in a downward trajectory, suggesting she had been on her knees at the time.
After killing her in August 2013, Medina used his mobile phone to take a picture of her body collapsed on the floor, covered in blood, and posted it to the social media site.
He also wrote a message admitting that he had killed her, and saying he expected to be jailed for life, before turning himself in to police.
Alfonso's 10-year-old daughter had been in the house at the time.
His defending lawyers tried but failed to have evidence admitted to the trial suggesting Alfonso dabbled in Satan worship, as well as testimony from a so-called 'shadow expert' who had said that reflections in the kitchen's stainless steel sink - caught on the house's internal security camera - indicated two upright figures fighting.
Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Rundle said: "No family should ever have to see their daughter killed and then exhibited worldwide on the internet like some macabre trophy to a husband's anger."
Medina will now be sentenced in January, and faces life imprisonment over the murder.
His lawyers said they planned to appeal his conviction.
