Release of Laquan McDonald shooting video may be too late to stop anger sweeping Chicago

It makes for horrifying viewing.

A white Chicago police officer is seen shooting and killing a black teenager, Laquan McDonald, who posed no immediate threat to anyone.

Yet despite that, Officer Jason Van Dyke emptied his magazine into him, all of which was caught on video.

That footage has now just been released, more than one year after the killing.

Officer Van Dyke has just been charged with first-degree murder. But it may be too late to stop anger - and possibly violence - sweeping Chicago.

For this is no isolated event. It comes amid an agonised national debate about police behaviour towards minorities, and the widespread view among African-Americans that the entire criminal justice system has a racist component to it.

This incendiary, shocking video brings that debate centre stage once more.
