Brits tell how they hid in cellar during Paris concert massacre

Two Britons have told how they spent hours hiding in a cellar at the Bataclan theatre in Paris after gunmen burst in and opened fire.

Scots Christine Tudhope and Mariesha Jack ran for an exit when terrorists began shooting, but ended up in a cellar with two Italians before locking themselves in.

The pair said they heard gunshots, explosions and screams coming from above before they were eventually rescued by armed police.

They described the attackers as "cowards" and "totally mindless" and said they had not expected to survive the incident.

More than 80 people were killed and many injured when gunmen stormed the Eagles of Death Metal concert on Friday night.

Mother-of-two Ms Jack said many people thought the first gunshot was part of the show but then realised what was happening and began to duck and attempt to escape.

She said: "I saw the bullets hitting the stage and just instantly knew it was gunfire and we needed to get out of there.

"In the confusion if we had gone left we would have been instantly out onto the street and probably the first people out. We ran right and ended up being in a room that we couldn't get out of."

From there they went into the cellar and were joined by two other concert-goers before barricading themselves inside.

"We managed to lock the door and just barricade ourselves in, turn the lights out and we were then trapped there for the next three hours having to listen to what was happening," said Ms Jack.

"We couldn't hide anywhere, we were just sitting there waiting to be shot.

"You just don't think you walk out of things like that."

After the terrorists blew themselves up and police entered the theatre, the pair were taken outside to a nearby apartment building.

They have now returned to Scotland and said they were looking forward to seeing their families.
