Becky Watts' stepbrother Nathan Matthews found guilty of murdering and dismembering Bristol teenager

Video report by ITV News Correspondent Rupert Evelyn

Nathan Matthews has been found guilty of murdering his stepsister Becky Watts and dismembering her body.

The jury at Bristol Crown Court took just three hours and 27 minutes to find Matthews guilty of murdering the Bristol teenager in a sexually motivated attack.

His girlfriend Shauna Hoare was acquitted of murder but convicted of manslaughter.

James Ireland, 23, and Donovan Demetrius, 30, were both acquitted of assisting an offender.

  • The murder

Matthews, 28, arrived at Becky's home in Crown Hill, Bristol on February 19 with a "kidnap kit" containing handcuffs and a stun gun.

He suffocated the 16-year-old in her bedroom during a "violent struggle", stabbed her in the stomach 15 times after her death and then dragged her body into the boot of his Vauxhall Zafira.

Matthews and his girlfriend Hoare, 21, then stayed in the house - with Becky's body in their boot - for a further eight hours, ordering a Chinese takeaway and browsing for television programmes to watch.

Matthews then drove to the home he shared with Hoare less than two miles away in Cotton Mill Lane.

Over the next three days, Matthews purchased an £80 circular saw, goggles, masks, bags and cling film before dismembering Becky's body.

The killer then hid his stepsister's remains in a garden shed.

He then carried on as normal, pretending nothing had happened - as the teenager's family and friends went out of their minds with worry.

Packages containing eight body parts were stored in a suitcase which were subsequently police discovered on March 3.

  • The motive

Matthews and Hoare had a "deep-rooted hatred" for Becky and shared "twisted sexual desires" about petite teenage girls, Bristol Crown Court heard over the near five-week trial.

  • Couple laughed listening to Frozen song

Matthews and Hoare listened to a parody of the Frozen song Do You Want To Build A Snowman entitled Do You Want To Hide A Body.

They played the song on YouTube, which describes a body being in more than one piece, as Becky's partially dismembered body lay in their bathroom.

Hoare told the jury that both laughed as they watched the clip.

Matthews was described himself as "emotionally unstable, psychologically disturbed metrosexual Neanderthal".

He was a hoarder and addicted to pornography.

When he attacked Becky, it was not the first time he had been violent towards women.

Matthews subjected Hoare, his co-accused, to abuse throughout their six-year relationship.

He tried strangling her, grabbed her hair, pushed her against a door and threw things at her.

Friends and family of the popular teenager - wearing blue ribbons in her memory - sobbed as the verdicts were read out.

Her mother, grandmother and brother said Becky was a "loyal, loving, smiley, feisty and caring" girl.

Speaking via police family liaison officer Detective Constable Liz Cousens outside Bristol Crown Court, they said it was a statement they "never wanted to make".

Becky's grandfather said his family had been "living a nightmare" since her death.

"We are still in that nightmare now," John Galsworthy said on the steps of the court.

Her uncle Sam Galsworthy said "justice had been done for our beautiful Becky" as he thanked the public for their support.

Mr Galsworthy and the teenager's aunt Sarah Broom told ITV News that "hate's not a powerful enough word" to describe how they feel towards Matthews.

  • 'Impossible to comprehend level of depravity'

Detective Superintendent Mike Cloutier said it was "virtually impossible to comprehend this level of depravity" shown by Matthews and Hoare.

"Matthews and Hoare concocted a heinous plan to kidnap his stepsister Becky, for reasons that they have failed to fully disclose, other than she occasionally left items on the floor, which could have tripped up Nathan Matthews' mother," he said.

"The body of evidence, however, has suggested a more sinister motive related to their deep-seated hatred of Becky and their twisted sexual desires."

  • Sentencing

Matthews and Shauna Hoare will be sentenced on Friday from 10am after being convicted.
