National Grid has issued a notice to the energy industry calling for more generation to be brought on to the system following "multiple plant breakdowns".

This is the first time such a notice has been issued in three years.

Despite the announcement, there is no immediate risk of blackouts, the power company said.

In a statement the company the move was "part of our standard toolkit for balancing supply and demand".

An additional 500 megawatts is being requested for between 16.30 and 18.30 this evening, according to the statement.

That is the equivalent to the power surge experienced at half-time during a big sports event.
