Elderly man found dead as severe flooding hits Portugal

An elderly man has been found dead in his car after a heavy storm caused severe flooding in southern Portugal.

Authorities say a clean-up operation is under way after the storm in the Algarve region.

The storm struck on Sunday and Albufeira is the hardest hit town in the region.

Police say the body of an 80-year-old man has been recovered from a submerged car.

Emergency crews have had to rescue stranded residents from their homes.

The storm swept away cars, uprooted trees and washed away roads.

Many stores were flooded by the rising water, with some premises seeing water reach the ceiling.
