Remnants of Hurricane Patricia to soak parts of southern US
Many parts of the UK enjoyed chilly but quiet conditions over the weekend whilst parts of Mexico were hit by the most intense hurricane on record.
Hurricane Patricia made landfall near Cuixmala, Mexico on October 23rd as a Category 5 Hurricane and locally produced up to 500mm of rain in a 24 hour period.
Alongside this was a 5-7m storm surge and most notably very strong winds. Prior to landfall, sustained winds of 200mph were recorded by an aircraft, with a central pressure of 879 hPa, the lowest central pressure of a Hurricane ever recorded.
The hurricane rapidly weakened and tracked north east towards the southern states of Texas and Louisiana over the weekend and brought torrential downpours of thundery rain which caused severe flooding.
And there is more to come. Severe thunderstorms are forecast for Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi and Alabama and these areas could see a further 100-200mm of rain today.
Another area of low pressure is expected to develop across north Mexico at the weekend, affecting the same states affected at the weekend. Texas and Louisiana could see a further 200-400 mm.
Here in the UK we are not expecting anything as dramatic, but strong winds and heavy rain are forecast on Tuesday and there is the risk of flooding in places.
