Corbyn calls on Cameron to take more Syrian refugees

Britain's negotiating process on European reform could be boosted if he accepted more Syrian refugees, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has said.

Speaking in the Commons, Corbyn reiterated demands for David Cameron to go beyond his commitment to take up to 20,000 refugees from the camps around Syria over five years.

The Prime Minister replied by insisting the UK's stance has gained a lot of respect within the EU, adding the 84 Church of England bishops who have asked him to accept at least 50,000 Syrian refugees are wrong.

Mr Cameron said: "No one has more respect for the bishops than me but on this on this occasion I think they're wrong.

"I think the right thing to do is to take 20,000 refugees from the camps and if you become part of the mechanism of distributing people around the European Union you're encouraging people to make that dangerous journey."

He added that the bishops should press other countries to fulfill their aid commitments.
