League One round-up: Gillingham leave it late to win

Rory Donnelly's injury-time goal sent Gillingham to the top of the table.

It looked like the Kent club would dominate but fail to make a breakthrough as Crewe goalkeeper Ben Garratt made a handful of saves to frustrate the visitors.

John Egan was denied in the first half while substitute Cody McDonald, on after half an hour for the injured Luke Norris, should have done better with a couple of chances.

But Donnelly cut in from the left and curled a shot into the net off the far post with 92 minutes on the clock to give Gillingham a 1-0 victory.

The Gills replaced Walsall at the summit after the Saddlers' surprise 2-1 home loss to struggling Chesterfield.

Headed goals in each half from Sylvan Ebanks-Blake and Ian Evatt were enough for the Spireites to win for only the second time in eight league matches, before Matt Preston replied for the hosts in injury time with his first ever goal for the club.

The biggest winners of the day were Wigan who won 5-0 against Colchester.

The Latics had a three-goal cushion after only 14 minutes as Donervon Daniels struck either side of a Max Power goal. Will Grigg grabbed a fourth just after the half hour mark and he completed the scoring with three minutes remaining.

Fleetwood almost matched their north west rivals as they netted four times without reply at home to Burton, who despite a second successive defeat stay third in the table.

Lee Gregory and Aiden O'Brien were on target in the first half as Millwall made it back-to-back home league wins with a 2-0 success against Swindon.

Southend are up to seventh after coming from behind to beat Barnsley 2-1 at Roots Hall. Josh Scowen's penalty put the visitors ahead but Anthony Wordsworth and Luke Prosser replied before half-time for Phil Brown's side.

It was also 2-1 at Glanford Park where hosts Scunthorpe secured a third straight success after goals from Scott Laird and Paddy Madden, from the penalty spot, usurped the lead given to Shrewsbury by Sullay KaiKai's 15th-minute opener.

Port Vale missed two penalties, both saved by Peterborough goalkeeper Ben Alnwick, and had to settle for a 1-1 draw.

Ebo Andoh put Vale in front before Michael O'Connor missed from the spot. Michael Bostwick equalised with a penalty for Posh and then Sam Foley was denied by Alnwick.

Oldham and Sheffield United also drew 1-1 at Boundary Park, where Danny Philliskirk's header was cancelled out by Matt Done.

Bury against Rochdale and Coventry versus Blackpool both ended goalless.
